PMETB trainee survey data

Each year the PMETB surveys STs and publishes the results on the web. This year there was an 85% response rate.
Finding the data relevant to us and our patches takes time, so I've put the relevant links below.

The report for GP training in Severn

Our trainees in hospital posts give us lower than median scores for most categories, but none were in the lowest quartile. So, none are badged by PMEB as "outliers".

Evaluations of our practice placements are closer to the UK median.

Our "educational supervisor" score for our trainees in hospital posts was low at 85%. This score relates to knowing who the supervisor is, knowing whom to talk to in confidence if needed, use of a learning portfolio, and having a training/learning agreement with the supervisor. However, the UK median for this category of 100%, so we may need to take action on this.

Other categories where Severn is just above the lowest quartile for GP hospital posts include:
  - feedback and assessment from supervisors
  - inductions, and
  - problems relating to study leave.

Summary of "outliers" (lowest or highest quartiles) by speciality and patch

Medicine:
  - low scores for Bristol for overall satisfaction, adequate experience and induction.

O&G:
  - Bath: low level of local teaching; Somerset: low scores for clinical supervision and regional teaching

Psychiatry:
  - no lowest quartile scores, and a couple of scores in highest quartile

Paeds:
  - high levels of satisfaction in Bristol and Bath, poor EWTD compliance and study leave score in Swindon

A&E:
  - three top quartile scores in Bristol, mixed in Somerset

Surgery:
  - four categories are in the lowest quartile in the Bristol patch; poor clinical supervision reported in Gloucestershire

GP placements:
  - no outliers

Limitations of the PMETB survey reports

The report gives overall scores for a speciality in a patch. Where a patch has more than one Trust providing education in a speciality, no breakdown is given. Bristol's low scores for surgery, for example, don't say whether they come from SMH urology, UBHT ENT, BEH ophthalmology, or all of them, for example. In that case, GPEs may need to look at reports grouped by "local education provider" (available at http://reports.pmetb.org.uk/GroupCluster.aspx?agg=AGG23%7c2009 ), though these will include scores given by core as well as GP trainees.

Summary and recommendations

Most of our scores in Severn are at, or just below, the median. This is good for a fairly new school that has a lot of new, posts in its schemes.

We have no Severn-wide outliers that would trigger a closer look by the PMETB.

The reports highlight outliers in some of the patches that need to be investigated and addressed within those patches.

As usual, GPEs will triangulate these findings with the informal feedback that they get from their trainees, internal QA visits, liaison with DMEs and LPECs, Deanery reports, EoP surveys…

We are developing the reporting tools for our Deanery's EoP surveys.

I propose that QA of hospital posts is an early task for our KTP worker (Clare Cauchois).
