GPSTRs in Severn Deanery are eligible to apply for a number of awards and competitions.  You can use them to augment that ever important CV, or to help you pursue an interest or passion within a particular branch of General Practice.

Internal Awards

Severn Deanery offers a number of internal scholarships that enable high-flying GPSTRs to develop additional skills in leadership and education.  Successful candidates are appointed during ST2 to a 13 (rather than the normal 12) month scholarship.  This allows an additional 30 days or so within ST3 to develop additional expertise.

Details of planned scholarships are circulated to all ST2 GPSTRs in the early spring of the year in which they will move into ST3.  References are sought from small group facilitators and educational supervisors to ensure both their support and that the applicant is comfortably progressing through our training programme.  There are competitive interviews designed to test your aptitude for each scholarship programme.

Leadership Scholars

Develop leadership skills for future positions as GP partners, PCT PEC members, medical politicians, in Regional or Strategic Roles.  In addition to their “normal” ST3 year they are expected to:

  • Attend the King’s Fund Clinical Leadership Programme, funded by the school - details below via the following link: King's Fund Management and Leadership course for Clinicians
  • Become the GPR member on the senior management committees of the school
  • Undertake a specific leadership project within the deanery under the guidance of a senior member of the school faculty.

  • Education Scholars

Develop educational skills for future roles in local clinical teams, working for PCTs, Educational Trusts and the Deanery.  Each scholar integrates within their local educational team and develops skills in areas such as small group facilitation, curriculum planning, assessment and clinical teaching.  In addition to their “normal” ST3 year they are expected to:

  • Complete 4 introductory modules from the University of Dundee, Certificate in Medical Education, funded by the school.
  • Engage in teaching and supporting local undergraduate medical students
  • Work as part of the local educational team delivering education particularly to GP foundation trainees and ST1 and ST2 GPSTRs
  • Train for and take part in the deanery selection panels for entry into GP specialist training in Severn.

  • External Awards

A small number of number of bodies offer awards and prizes for GPSTRs.  If these interest you, we would be keen to support you:

    Rheumatology

The ARC (Arthritis Research Campaign) offer regional and national awards for GPSTRs.  Entry should be in the form of an audit, case study or service development.

More details available via the link below:

    ARC GP Registrar Prize website

    RCGP

In conjunction with Roche, the pharmaceutical giant, the college offer awards to “support original and innovative work undertaken during vocational training”.  This is presumably in relation to an audit, project or case study.

The RCGP also periodically offer the rather cheesily named “Great Expectations Bursaries” to attend various conferences related to general practice (mainly their own!)

The arrangements for these awards seem to vary from year to year, and we can do no more than to point you at their website, and suggest you try their search box:
