This two day residential course is designed to explore the needs of GPStRs who will not experience psychiatry as part of their training scheme.

It is often quoted that 25% of general practice consultations are wholly or substantially concerned with mental health problems – and including the inevitable psychological component of any physical illness means this may be a considerable under-estimate.  Trainees who do not have psychiatry posts during their training scheme may feel at a disadvantage in general practice, and it can take time to catch up on the consultation and assessment skills required.  This course aims to explore the mental health and emotional components of the general practice consultation, as well as covering current guidance on common mental health diagnoses.  The teaching is based around presentations by GP educators and psychiatrists, with an equal proportion of small group discussion to explore the concepts, issues and challenges raised. The course is likely to be most useful for those who have already done some general practice, at ST or foundation level, giving them points of reference and suitable cases for discussion. The emphasis is on acquiring skills for further development, rather than didactic factual teaching.
